The Overwatch League is back in full swing this weekend and Blizzard had a big announcement to share about the post-season.
The company will close out OWL’s 2023 season by taking the Playoffs and Grand Finals to Toronto. It’s the second time a major OWL event will be held in the city after last year’s Summer Showdown.
The event will take place at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Playoffs are scheduled to run from September 28-30 and the Grand Finals are set for October 1. A preferred ticket presale for VIP and floor seats will start on July 21 and general admission sales will commence on July 28.
After the play-in tournaments, the top five teams from the West region and the top three from the East will make it to the Playoffs. They’ll be split into groups of four, with each group having a separate double-elimination tournament.
Two teams from each group will advance to the Grand Finals bracket. This is a single-elimination tournament with all three matches going down on October 1 (so you’ll have a few matches to watch if you buy a ticket for that day). The last team standing will be crowned the 2023 Overwatch League champions, and they’ll take home a cool $1 million.
This is fun news, especially since I live in Canada. In my nearly six years of covering the Overwatch League, I’ve never been to an event in person. It might finally be time for me to fix that.
