The First Image From The Delayed Live-Action ‘Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs’ Is Kind Of Shocking

Disney has released the very first official image from its live-action adaptation of Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs and it comes as something of a surprise given the leaked images we previously saw, which led to grumblings and rumors that perhaps the titular dwarfs would not, in fact, be dwarfs:

The image, among others, was first published by The Daily Mail under one of the most ridiculous, long-winded headlines I’ve ever read. They refer to the people in the image as Snow White and the Seven . . . Politically Correct Companions’ and you get a pretty good sense of the tenor of the article from there.

I discussed the outrage over all of this over on my YouTube channel.

Now Disney has released an actual, official image from the film and it looks . . . like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to me!

Let’s zoom in a bit:

I mean, this looks animated to me. The dwarfs are cartoons! And that’s fine, honestly, at least they have character, unlike the CGI fish in The Little Mermaid. And it’s very colorful! So much color and magic is lost in these live-action adaptations, but maybe Disney is learning and listening and will give us a well-lit, well-saturated movie this time around. I’m pleasantly surprised by this image. It’s even more colorful than the original, though it’s a bit on the shadowy side. Hopefully we get some other images soon, perhaps of Snow White and her companions outside picking apples, or whistling while they work.

The film will still have diversity, which is also good. Zegler, of course, is Latina and she’ll be joined by British stage actor Ansu Kabia as the Huntsman:

Gal Gadot will play the evil queen and Andrew Burnap plays a character named Jonathan. I’m not sure if he’s the prince or how that’s going to work as the story sounds as if it will be changed to some degree from the original. Marc Webb is the director. Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson penned the script.

Along with the first look image, Disne announced that the film is being delayed into 2025. Previously it was on the docket for a 2024 theatrical release. What do you think of the image? Let me know on Twitter or Facebook.

P.S. I will add that I think it would have been nice for Disney to cast little people in the dwarf roles. I prefer CGI dwarfs to simply not having dwarfs at all, but there are lots of little people in the acting business and not a ton of roles for them! This is kind of the perfect movie to give meaningful parts to that demographic. Meanwhile, if you’re going to make so much of the film CGI (which they did with Lion King, Jungle Book, etc.) why not just make the whole thing CGI? Why not just stop with these silly live-action (or half-live-action) remakes and do colorful, lively CGI animated films instead?

P.P.S. This reminds me that I’d love a Shrek remake using modern-day CGI. I’d just want all the voice lines and shots to remain the exact same. The only thing new would be the animation and maybe better sound. Make it so.
